Regenerative Medicine Applications in Damaged Tissue


Regenerative medicine is a multidisciplinary field in which science and medicine converge to repair, replace, and/or regenerate compromised cells, tissues, and organs. Many regenerative medicine pursuits are centered on the use of stem cell therapy. These unique cell types have the ability to self-renew and give rise to many different types of specialized cells within the body, making them the perfect candidates for healing in areas that have been affected by injury or disease. Stem Cell Therapy 

Stem cell therapy works by taking either the patient’s own cells, which can be derived from fat (adipose) tissue or a donor source, and strategically injecting them into an affected area. 

Stem cell therapy’s potential applications for treating damaged tissue are diverse and promising. Here are just a few examples of conditions for which the treatment is being used:

  • Spinal cord injuries: Whether from infection or trauma, spinal cord injuries can lead to painful, debilitating symptoms. Stem cells support the regeneration of spinal tissue and have been linked to improved balance and sensation. 
  • Osteoarthritis: The natural, age-related wear and tear of cartilage tissue can cause pain and swelling in patients. Stem cells have the potential to regenerate cartilage tissue, resulting in improved symptoms. 
  • Sports & athletic injuries: Stem cell treatment for sports injuries of the tendons, ligaments, muscles, and cartilage is non-invasive and promotes regeneration and growth in the target areas.

PRP Therapy

PRP is a substance made up of concentrated platelets and proteins derived from a patient’s own blood. Once these have been isolated from blood, they can be injected into the target treatment areas. 

PRP therapy is used for conditions such as tendonitis and arthritis, along with other types of tissue damage. Improvements include faster healing, reduced need for medication, decreased or eliminated pain, and slowed or stopped rate of cartilage damage.
